Why Should I Spend The Money On An Uninterruptible Power Supply?

On a good day, electrical power provided to your facility is neither clean enough nor consistent enough to satisfy the demand of the sensitive electronics on your central control system. Studies have shown that any computer in any environment is subject to more than 120 power problems per month. The result of power problems can range from the minor - lockups and wear on the system, to the dramatic -complete data loss or burnt components. Despite the improvement in the capabilities of modern personal computers, even a brief power event can result in serious consequences.

Your electric service can have:

  1. SAGS - short term decreases in voltage levels either caused by on site devices like motors, compressors, etc., that can result in lockups, crashes and data corruption.
  2. BLACKOUTS - total loss of power from excessive demand on the power grid, lightning storms, etc., that can result in partial or total loss of data.
  3. SPIKES - a dramatic increase in voltage, typically from a lightning strike or when utility power comes back on after having been knocked out, that can result in catastrophic damage to components.
  4. SURGES - short term increase in voltage - usually caused by high-powered motors (air conditioners, appliances, power equipment, etc.) being turned off and the extra voltage is dissipated through the power lines, can stress components and cause them to ultimately fail.
  5. NOISE - this can either be electromagnetic interference (EMI) or radio frequency interference (RFI) - these can be caused by numerous factors such as lightning, generators, radio transmitters, chargers, industrial equipment - noise can cause errors in programs and data files.

These power problems will only increase in number over time - the demand for power is increasing yet the utility capacity in America is not keeping pace. As a result, it becomes more important each day that you protect your central controller from these power problems. The best way to do that is to purchase an Uninterruptible Power Supply. Be sure it also provides protection from surge on your phone lines into your computer!

Since the NSN began in 1991, the number one reason for replacing a computer has been surge issues that could have been avoided had a UPS been installed!
